The city's history began in the 10th century, making it one of the oldest in the region.
The first Jewish families started to settle in Dolyna in the 16th century. The profitable salt trade attracted new settlers to the town and resulted in the rapid growth of the Jewish community. In the first Partition of Poland, Dolyna became part of the Austrian Empire. By the end of the 19th century big fires destroyed the town completely. The first decade of the new century was devoted to the revival of the town.
During World War II the city was occupied by the Soviet Union (September 1939 - June 1941), Hungary (July 1941), and Germany (August 1941 - 1944). During the German occupation, the Jewish population was murdered.
